Job Description Summary

Do you have extensive life science lab experience and are passionate about contributing to an efficient and safe lab environment? STEMCELL, Canada’s largest biotech company, is looking for a Lab Manager for our Research and Development labs.

In this role, you will be responsible for managing the day-to-day lab operations, including preventative equipment maintenance and troubleshooting, implementing safety and quality standards, and sourcing common supplies/reagents and equipment. As a lab manager you are a key contributor to lab training curriculum and recommending technical best practices and process improvements.

Job Description

Duties and responsibilities

  • Manage the training of lab staff in lab safety and maintenance tasks, and ensure the implementation and adherence to all required safety procedures and protocols; as well as support training and onboarding of new Lab Management team members

  • Oversee laboratory operations, including supporting shared lab budgets and CAPEX, managing inventory of reagents, consumables, animals and primary cells

  • Contribute to the planning and execution of lab-based and continuous improvement projects, initiatives and services in collaboration with key stakeholders

  • Collaborate with other departments such as facilities (building services, lab services, and equipment), environmental health and safety, and other lab managers to ensure the labs are run efficiently and safely and to resolve any issues

  • Recommend technical best practices and process improvements to increase lab productivity


Knowledge and qualifications

  • BSc degree with 6-10 years of relevant experience or MSc with 4-8 years of experience or Ph.D. with 2-5 years of experience is required

  • Advanced knowledge of laboratory safety practices as well as lab techniques such as flow cytometry, microscopy, and animal and human research ethics will be needed

  • Excellent communication skills (verbal, written and presentation) both in one-on-one and in group settings is essential

  • Ability to resolve problems independently and apply critical and analytical thinking is required

  • Project management and/or change management expertise highly desirable
