Indigenous Rookie League (IRL) Specialist, Jays Care Programs

IRL Specialists on the Jays Care Programs team are tasked with supporting the design, delivery, growth and development of Indigenous Rookie League programs across the country. Indigenous Rookie League is a unique inter-generational baseball program that increases physical and mental health outcomes for children and youth, while also promoting healing through innovative points systems, inter-generational connections and collaboration among neighbouring communities. The leagues are co-created with leadership from Tribal Councils or Health Authorities to meet the unique goals for that area. Partners receive league design support, funding, equipment, coach training, and community-based launch support to help their leagues succeed. IRL Specialists are assigned 4-6 leagues to support. This includes a significant amount of travel to communities involved in the leagues.

 

In addition, the IRL Specialist can expect to be assigned to support a wide range of projects including, but not limited to:

  • Winter Hampers
  • James Bay Girls At Bat programs
  • Wrap-around support initiatives

Indigenous Rookie League Specialists on the Jays Care team are expected to be highly driven, have a phenomenal work ethic and be skilled at working independently as well as in a team. In an average year, Specialists tend to work on 3-5 major projects applying the following skills on a regular basis:

  • Planning, executing and assessing high-quality training workshops for youth and adults
  • Using the most up-to date research and learning to craft content and resources 
  • Facilitating workshops and program content that is wildly engaging, inclusive and accessible for all participants
  • Creating workshop and program spaces that are welcoming, inclusive and barrier free

RECEIVING/
DELIVERING FEEDBACK

  • Utilizing feedback and building it in to their development and goals
  • Using a standardized format for providing constructive feedback to others
  • Actively scheduling opportunities for debriefing, discussion and feedback
  • Seeing conflict as an opportunity for transformation and growth

USING BASEBALL FOR DEVELOPMENT

  • Demonstrating high confidence with the rules, terminology and fundamentals of baseball/softball
  • Coaching baseball fundamentals
  • Adapting baseball drills and skills for a wide range of variations
  • Adapting activities to focus on a range of outcomes    

 

 

 

 DESIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation, Social Work, Kinesiology, Equity Studies, or related field i.e. human services, health or education
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Experience working in partnership with Indigenous communities
  • An understanding of the history and impact of residential schools
  • 2+ years working with children and/or youth living in historically marginalized communities
  • 2+ years designing and implementing sport-based programs that are trauma-informed
  • 1+ years leading trainings/workshops for adults
  • Good demonstration of problem-solving skills and ability to work in a group
  • Strong technology skills with competency in PowerPoint, Excel and different online communication platforms (Zoom, Microsoft Teams)
  • Willingness to work outside of regular 9-5 schedule
  • Valid ‘G’ Driver’s License
  • Experience working with children living with disabilities an asset
  • Fluency in French is an asset
