Summary

Reporting to the Leader, Plant Services or designate, performs maintenance and repair duties in a variety of areas related to buildings, mechanical, electrical and equipment. Organizes and performs preventative maintenance and repairs on wheelchairs, stretchers, lifts and other assigned equipment or requisitions and inspects repairs by external resources.


Qualifications / Skills and Education

Education
Grade 10, plus three years related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Duties and Responsibilities

Replaces plumbing fixtures such as sinks and toilets, repairs plumbing fixtures such as water supply lines and waste lines; repairs sprinkler lines. Performs carpentry repairs on cupboards, shelves, furniture, walls, ceilings and windows by applying materials such as dry wall, wood panelling, floor and ceiling coverings and glass; constructs items such as shelves and cupboards. Applies paint and other finishes by brush, roller, and/or spray; removes and replaces tiles, linoleum and carpet. Performs minor renovations such as constructing walls. Identifies nature of malfunction of equipment and appliances and performs electrical and mechanical repairs by disassembling motors and equipment; cleaning, oiling, greasing and replacing parts; performs welding repairs by soldering connections; and changing seals and bearings; reassembles as needed; installs items such as timers, switches, receptacles and ballasts and changes circuits. Refers equipment for repair to Supervisor. Performs preventative maintenance or repairs on wheelchairs, stretchers, lifts and other assigned equipment. Arranges for the moving of equipment from a department to Plant Services for repair. Identifies when equipment requires replacement rather than repair and notifies Chief Engineer. Requisitions and coordinates major repairs with external companies. Inspects repair work and arranges for further work if required. Maintains inventory and records of equipment parts by identifying re-order points according to pre-determined levels and placing orders by completing requisition forms and submitting for approval. Maintains records such as work requests received and performed. Maintains work area and tools for operating effectiveness, cleanliness and safety. Performs safety checks on equipment and electrical appliances for defects such as faulty wires and improper grounding. Performs preventative maintenance procedures to designated equipment in accordance with department procedures. Performs daily rounds to ensure proper operation of mechanical equipment and records information as needed. Performs other related duties as assigned.
