POSITION SUMMARY:
We are actively looking for a Manufacturing Chemist to join our Development Department at Nano One’s Innovation Hub in Burnaby, BC. They will play a crucial role in supporting our talented team of engineers and scientists in the production of cathode materials. Reporting to the Scale-up or Pilot Team Lead, this role involves contributing to the setup and execution of reactions using specialized equipment tailored for Li-ion precursor production. Additionally, the Manufacturing Chemist will play a pivotal role in interpreting data gathered from various characterization techniques, effectively communicating their findings to the team lead, and maintaining safety protocols in both the lab and pilot plant areas by implementing 5S practices. Alongside these responsibilities, they will collaborate closely with the scale-up team, ensuring timely task completion to meet project deadlines. They will also help support the execution of the expansion of our operations at larger scales and ensure that productivity and quality targets are met at the pilot phase.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Execution and Collaboration with Teams
  • Collaborate with the scale-up team lead to execute planned reactions at the kg scale, ensuring precision and adherence to protocols.
  • Support the development and commissioning of alternative equipment for cathode production alongside the engineering and scientific teams.
  • Work closely with the R&D team to transfer our technology at a larger scale.
  • Provide support to scale-up and R&D activities as required.
  • Collect, interpret, and effectively communicate results to both scale-up and R&D teams, actively contributing to continuous improvement efforts.
Data Acquisition and Analysis
  • Assist in data acquisition across various process areas such as reactions, drying, and thermal processing through close collaboration with colleagues.
  • Assist in obtaining and interpreting results for analysis, focusing on physical characterization and electrochemical characterization.
  • Ensure accurate and comprehensive record-keeping by maintaining detailed logs of process data and consistently updating databases.
Operations and Safety Compliance
  • Ensure efficient and safe operation of the pilot plant, meeting production objectives, and upholding safety protocols and operating procedures.
  • Ensure a clean, organized, and safe work environment through implementation of 5S while adhering to Nano One’s safety protocols and operating procedures.
  • Create comprehensive operating procedures, safety protocols, and maintenance plans for effective execution and safety compliance within the working environment.
  • Perform general housekeeping and additional laboratory-related tasks as needed.
  • Assist with Pilot Plant operations including handling various chemicals and operating equipment.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree (BSc) in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field, providing foundational knowledge pertinent to the battery production industry.
  • 3-5 years of hands-on laboratory/production experience, specifically within the battery production industry.
  • 3-5 years of direct experience in a battery industrial setting specializing in cathode production, demonstrating familiarity with manufacturing processes.
  • 3-5 years expertise in fabricating and testing cathode materials (NMC, LFP & LMNO) in both coin cell and pouch cell configurations within a battery production context.
  • Previous involvement in a production facility within the battery manufacturing domain is advantageous, highlighting familiarity with industry-specific operations.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds, essential for handling equipment or materials.
  • Strong adherence to Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), coupled with proficient data analysis and report writing skills pertinent to battery materials analysis.
  • Proven capability to work effectively within collaborative research and development teams.
  • Hands-on experience in troubleshooting production equipment, particularly drying equipment, kilns, or machinery utilized in battery manufacturing processes.
  • Proficiency in using sophisticated analytical instruments commonly employed in battery materials analysis, such as ICP-OES, BET surface area analysis, Carbon/Sulfur analysis, Laser diffraction particle size analysis, SEM, etc.
  • Demonstrated expertise or exposure to in-situ quality control processes within a battery production environment is advantageous.
  • Prior experience implementing and maintaining 5S principles for workplace organization and efficiency, preferably within a battery manufacturing context.
