Position Overview
FortisBC is looking for a qualified engineering co-op student to complete an 8 month work term. In this position, you will be part of the Conservation and Energy Management department that helps our customers save energy and deliver the energy savings targets laid out in our energy efficiency plans. These plans are a key component of the CleanBC Plan to pursue energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in BC.
The planning and evaluation group is responsible for: identifying new and innovative energy saving technologies; evaluating and reviewing energy savings measures in existing programs; developing tools and plans to support Conservation and Energy Management programs; and working on codes and standards for energy saving measures.
Responsibilities
- Perform technical reviews of energy savings and costs of energy saving projects including lighting, HVAC, refrigeration, compressed air, and industrial processes
- Develop engineering spreadsheet calculations for energy saving measures
- Perform Measurement and Verification for energy savings measures using data collected in the field, advanced meter interval data, or energy modeling using RETScreen or other software
- Perform site visits to measure and verify the energy savings of energy saving measures
- Review literature from energy efficiency organizations, communicate with equipment manufacturers, and work with consultants and other experts to identify new and innovative energy saving technologies
- Review and summarize codes and standards for energy efficient equipment that are applicable in British Columbia and assist in identifying and managing opportunities for FortisBC to support codes and standards
Requirements
- Enrolled in a Bachelor of Engineering program with an Electrical or Mechanical focus recommended- Third or Fourth year preferred
- Enrolled in a Co-op program
- Valid driver’s license and current abstract
Other Qualifications
- Knowledge of technologies, systems of technologies, building design, or industrial processes that can reduce energy use (energy savings measures)
- Experience with Microsoft Office Suite
- Strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills
- Experience with report and memo writing in a corporate environment is an asset
- Programming skills and data analytics experience are an asset

- This is an 8 month co-op term starting in January 2024
In this role, you will have the option to participate in a flexible work program, enabling you to work from an approved flex location in British Columbia up to 85 days a year (equivalent to approximately two days a week), subject to business or operational needs.
