Data analytics is revolutionizing how top athletes develop and create new engaging ways to consume sports – Drive Hockey is pioneering this technology for mainstream hockey. The challenge with sports analytics has always been the time and costs associated with collecting data. Drive Hockey has eliminated these barriers through using small, powerful wearable sensors to capture thousands of data points per second automatically. Its AI driven platform breaks-down the game to milliseconds and identifies events and performance details for every player on the ice in real time. Coaches and players have access to their own private analytics dashboards. The system, as a whole, builds stronger hockey IQ and provides unbiased data to better evaluate, develop, and compete.

We’re looking for a SportsTech Engineer to lead hands-on research and testing of the Drive Hockey Analytics tracking enabled pucks and player sensors under the Digital Skills for Youth Program.

The SportsTech Engineer would work to assist in the development and commercialization of Drive Hockey’s patent-pending hockey player and puck tracking technology .

Background:

Major challenges within the emerging sports data economy include being able to effectively collect meaningful data and to provide actionable insights and predictive outcomes based on the data collected.

Drive Hockey Analytics is solving these challenges using sensors and with a focus on the hockey segment. The company has developed patent pending technology using a variety of sensors embedded into equipment, players and pucks to track data in real-time, during play. Collected data is processed using AI techniques to produce meaningful statistics, and applications that help:

  • Coaches make more intelligent game time decisions,
  • Players improve their game IQ,
  • Trainers better improve performances,
  • Scouts better identify and quantify talent
  • Fans enjoy and consume sports in more ways

The industry is extremely interested in adapting Drive Hockey’s technology into their environments, but in order for the company to bring its technology into organized league environments, it needs to ensure accuracy and efficacy of the player and puck sensors

What you’d be doing:

  • Actively test functional, usability, performance, safety, reliability, durability, serviceability, conformance, and aesthetic requirements of the Drive Hockey player and puck sensors
  • Develop documentation of the research testing process, summarizing results and findings, and providing recommendations to address any areas of issue or improvement
  • Promote the digitization of the organization and operational processes within the data and technology teams
  • Learn to be an expert in player / puck tracking technology using Drive Hockey’s system
  • Assemble tags and kits from components; use laser cutters, CNC, 3D printers, solder, reflow ovens, epoxies and power tools
  • Work with data and technology teams to ensure accurate data collection
  • Other general administration and operational duties as required

About you:

  • Completed or in pursuit of a university or college degree in electrical engineering, robotics, big data, artificial intelligence, mechatronics, and/or applied technology research; graduate level or PhD students preferred
  • Prior experience in applied research projects for the commercialization of technology assets considered a plus
  • Knowledge of and passion for hockey or sports technology industry considered an asset
  • Strong communicator with excellent writing, analytical and problem solving skills who is highly motivated with a bias for action with the ability to work in conditions of uncertainty or with limited information
  • Technologically inclined and proficient in Microsoft Office Suite with familiarity of basic programming, data and statistical analysis, and fabrication desired
