Department Overview

Motorola Solutions is headquartered in Chicago, IL. The U.S. Navy's Enterprise Land Mobile Radio System is a global, state of the art, communications system, supporting public safety, under the Federal Global Services and Sustainment Project Management Office. The department supports all aspects of mission critical communications for the U.S. Navy and other DoD branches including; Project Management, Technical Services, Break-Fix, Security and System Health Monitoring, Cybersecurity, System Upgrades, Engineering and more. This department is a part of Motorola Solutions U.S. Federal Government Services.


Job Description

  • The Field Service Technician (FST) will be responsible for the optimization and technical support of complex mission critical communication systems.

  • The FST will provide advanced technical support of specialized systems and product applications including advanced troubleshooting of software driven electronics, provisioning of communication system infrastructure and performance optimization of RF and Broadband architecture including, but not limited to, legacy analog, advanced digital P25 and data infrastructure.

  • Maintain, optimize, test and document complex communications systems.

  • Provide weekly reports of activities and accomplishments.

  • Deliver strong knowledge of R.F. systems, such as transmitters, receivers, and antenna networks

  • Perform preventative maintenance routines to ensure proper system operation with focus on trend analysis and documentation of results.

  • Develop solutions to difficult technical problems encountered as part of system implementation, upgrades or support issues.

  • Assist the Master Site FSTs and Engineering as needed during normal daily maintenance within the master site, dispatch sites, and RF sites.

Travel/Location:

  • Some domestic travel of up to 25% annually may be required.

  • The FST must be available for an on-call rotation shared amongst the team to support after hours corrective maintenance.

  • Provide on-site and remote troubleshooting on the Navy ELMR system.

Candidate Knowledge:

  • Experience with Host Based Security Systems (HBSS)

  • Experience with CAC/PIV authentication based systems

  • Working knowledge of Radio Frequency (RF) theory

  • Experience with firewalls and security related applications

  • 2 years’ of hands-on experience with Motorola ASTRO technology including Zone Core, ASTRO Networking, Microsoft Active Directory, McAfee security suite, MCC7500 dispatch consoles, NICE Logging, etc.

  • Excellent knowledge and demonstration of hardware and software tools

  • Experience with ESXi VMware virtualization suites.

  • Experience with McAfee suite of security products.

  • Proficient with Windows 10, Windows Server 2012, and Active Directory.

  • Experience with one or more of the following: LMR, RF systems, RF interfaces, wired/wireless communication systems or networking equipment.

  • Must have very strong knowledge of wired communications systems, such as local area networks (LAN) and wide area networks (WAN), must be proficient in computer network installation, configuration and maintenance systems to include cabling, routers, switches, firewalls and bridges.

  • Capable of performing maintenance of server hardware/OS and software infrastructure and troubleshooting to resolve system/application related issues.

  • Strong knowledge in standard telephony and dedicated data circuits, as well as knowledge of packet switching techniques

  • Highly computer literate with proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, and G-Suite applications.

  • Strong self-management skills and "people" skills to work closely with Motorola’s customers and subcontractor (MSS) community, as well as, Motorola Sales, Engineering, Project Management, and Customer Service teams

  • Must be self-motivated and self-managed to perform the required duties at a distance from direct supervision.

  • Strong organization skills and a high attention to detail.

  • Demonstrated ability to balance multiple concurrent responsibilities of varying priorities and shift focus from one to another with minimal loss of productivity or work quality.

  • Very familiar with the latest technologies and troubleshooting techniques.

  • Strong organization skills and a high attention to detail.

  • Demonstrated experience working in IT production environments.

  • Demonstrated ability to balance multiple concurrent responsibilities of varying priorities and shift focus from one to another with minimal loss of productivity or work quality.

Candidate Requirements:

  • Must be able to obtain background clearance as required by government customer(s).

  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. indefinitely is required. Employer work permit sponsorship is not available for this position.

  • Must have a current valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.

  • Must be willing and able to obtain DoD Secret-level clearance as required.

  • Required to complete standard form 86 questionnaire for national security positions.

  • Must be in possession of Comp TIA Security+ certification or be capable of obtaining it within the first 6 months of employment.

  • Must be in possession of minimum ETA CET-a certification or be capable of obtaining it within the first 6 months of employment.

  • Comp TIA Network+, MCSE, and CISSP certifications.

This position is subject to working in high security areas governed by the US Department of Justice's "Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Security Policy" and therefore requires successfully passing a more stringent fingerprint background check administered by Motorola Solutions Inc. customers.

Basic Requirements

  • 4+ years experience in one of the following: Electronics Technician, System Technologist, System Manager, Network Engineering or Field Service Experience with one or more of the following: LMR, RF systems, Radio Communications, Radio Frequency, Wired/Wireless Communication Systems, IT Systems, Telecommunications, Public Safety, Engineering or Networking equipment.
  • Must be able to obtain background clearance as required by government customer.
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. indefinitely is required. Employer work permit sponsorship is not available for this position.
